Kivijärvi

Waters and vitality flow from here
Kivijärvi located in the rocky area of Suomenselkä. One-fifth of the municipality’s area is covered with lakes which have attracted Finnish people to build their summer cabins on the shores of Kivijärvi. There are a total of 89 lakes, the largest lakes are Kivijärvi, Heitjärvi, and Heikinjärvi. The area has been inhabited by people for hundreds of years but the Kivijärvi was founded in 1868.

According to an old story, there was a problem deciding where to build a church. After consideration, It was decided that the place of the church would be chosen by placing a rooster on a log of wood to drift over the lake, and where the rooster would land, they would build the church. This old story can be still seen in the coat arms of Kivijärvi municipality which has a black rooster sailing with a log of wood.

Kivijärvi is a small town but the surrounding nature is clean and quiet, we highly recommend you to visit Kivijärvi in the summertime. Big forests and lake areas surrounding small Kivijärvi town offer a perfect place for you to spend your summer in peace and quiet. You can explore the nature around you by walking, trail running or by renting a kayak or fat bike.

Long-distance to big cities gives you the possibility to watch the stars at night or listen to the silence in the woods. If you choose to travel in winter, you must try the combination of hot sauna and icy water swimming. This might sound extreme but because its various health benefits and the euphoric feeling that it causes ice swimming has established its place in the heart of Finnish culture. Top attractions are the church, museums, and Petlokankaan sport park. If you are interested to see traditional Finnish summer events, you can attend to “Kivijärvi soi”- event, which is an international classical music event.

As you might also know, Finnish people love karaoke. Once summer there is the possibility to attend a traditional karaoke competition, in which everyone can participate and compete for the desired Kivijärvi “Laulu-kukko” (singing rooster) title. The distance from Helsinki airport is 386 kilometers, about 4 hours drive from Kivijärvi. Finnair operates flights from all around the world to Helsinki daily and from Helsinki, to Kivijärvi you can choose between your own car or public transportation. Public transportation is possible but we still recommend you to come with your own car, this how you are able to reach for example the national park.
