Salla

In the midde of nowhere
Ecological care is a clear choice for the primary value of Salla, as it is of vital importance in the wilderness: without nature there is no well-being. Nature is Salla’s well-guarded treasure, a source of physical and mental nourishment. Salla’s tourism is almost entirely based on nature. Recreation in the fresh nature gives enriching and meaningful experiences. It inspires and boosts your personal strengths. The pure nature also tastes and feels good: berries, mushrooms, wild game, clean water, and useful plants have always been the necessary and privileged ingredients for life in Salla.

The most significant natural attractions for tourists are the Oulanka National Park in the southern part of Salla and the Tuntsa wilderness in the northern part. The Tuntsa wilderness has been called one of Europe’s finest hiking destinations. Its beauty can best be admired from the UKK hiking trail that passes through the area. Belonging to the Natura 2000 areas, Tuntsa’s landscape is a beautiful and important wilderness area

Salla is known for its military history. Battlefields and monuments from the Winter War are located around the municipality. The war also left its scars on the nature, where war paraphernalia and trenches can still be found. The stone anti-tank obstacles of the Salpa Line can even be seen in the village of Salla, and in Aholanvaara 1 km of the Salpa Line still remains. In its time, the Salpa Line extended from the Gulf of Finland to Salla, where it continued on with field fortifications as far as the Arctic Ocean.
