Rymättylä

Rymättylä is an archipelago parish whose history is indelibly linked to seine-fishing. The local museum illustrates the history of rustic life in the area, as well as seine-fishing and the related equipment. Rymättylä museum is located in what used to be the main building of Maskulaisten Talo farm. The yard includes a windmill, a two-storey barn, a smoke sauna and a boathouse with old local boats. The museum also hosts changing exhibitions. A permanent exhibition in a storeroom displays the tradition of seine-fishing.

Arts & Culture

Cultural attractions in Röölä include the Herring Heritage Center Dikseli and the Mill Museum. In Rymättylä, traditional herring is respected so much that the Herring Heritage Center Dikseli was opened there on 17 June 2010. The museum, which respects the traditions of herring production, exhibits the entire process of herring production, from catching to preparing. Dikseli also has a stage suitable for theatrical use, which can be rented.

History & Architecture

Rymättylä Church is dedicated to the name and memory of the Apostle Jaakko the Elder. The oldest part of the church is a sacristy, built in connection with a wooden church on the site in the early 14th century. The stone church was built in the late 14th or early 15th century. The church has three sculptures of Jaakko’s pilgrimage. The oldest of them, a fine 1350s wooden sculpture preserved in its original colors, is known as Rymättylä's smiling Jaakko. The paintings are Finland's last the ones fromthe middle ages, from 1520s.

The Small Archipelago Trail is a shorter option of the main Archipelago Trail. It turns off the large trail in Nagu where you take a ferry via the remarkable Seili Island directly to Hanka in Naantali. The Small Archipelago Trail is a roundtrip that is about 120 km. The route runs through five towns, fifteen permanently inhabited islands and some smaller uninhabited islands.
