Asikkala
Gate to Päijänne Lakeland
Its where the lakes Vesijärvi and Päijänne unite. In Vääksy make sure to enjoy something to drink on the edge of the canal, which share the village in two sides. The area is a popular destination in the summertime and boasts many attractions and a choice of charming local shops.
When traveling by car it’s a must to visit the Ridge of Pulkkilanharju, an 8 kilometers long line of islands, connected by three bridges and formed during the last ice age. Pulkkilanharju is also a nationally important island to ornithologists to observe the migration of birds in the spring and autumn.
Asikkala is also part of the Päijänne National Park which is situated in the area of three counties: Asikkala, Padasjoki, and Sysmä. It consists mainly of islands and is partly even difficult to reach. Near the southern end on Finland´s second-largest lake Päijänne, many beautiful islands with sandy esker ridges and rugged rocky shores are protected within Päijänne National Park. The park covers about fifty uninhabited islands and islets, as well as undeveloped parts of islands, all set in the pristine waters of lake Päijänne.
During July the cruise boat regularly calls at Kelvenne and other islands in the national park while sailing between Padasjoki, Vääksy, and Sysmä.
During Summer, do not forget to visit 1 kilometer long and especially low Kalmari Beach, which is known for the best sand in South-Finland! It’s the perfect beach for families, since it’s full of actions.
The region of Asikkala is best to be visited by car.
