Asikkala

Gate to Päijänne Lakeland
When visiting Asikkala it’s a must to check for the small and charming little town of Vääksy.
Its where the lakes Vesijärvi and Päijänne unite. In Vääksy make sure to enjoy something to drink on the edge of the canal, which share the village in two sides. The area is a popular destination in the summertime and boasts many attractions and a choice of charming local shops.

When traveling by car it’s a must to visit the Ridge of Pulkkilanharju, an 8 kilometers long line of islands, connected by three bridges and formed during the last ice age. Pulkkilanharju is also a nationally important island to ornithologists to observe the migration of birds in the spring and autumn.

Asikkala is also part of the Päijänne National Park which is situated in the area of three counties: Asikkala, Padasjoki, and Sysmä. It consists mainly of islands and is partly even difficult to reach. Near the southern end on Finland´s second-largest lake Päijänne, many beautiful islands with sandy esker ridges and rugged rocky shores are protected within Päijänne National Park. The park covers about fifty uninhabited islands and islets, as well as undeveloped parts of islands, all set in the pristine waters of lake Päijänne.
During July the cruise boat regularly calls at Kelvenne and other islands in the national park while sailing between Padasjoki, Vääksy, and Sysmä.

During Summer, do not forget to visit 1 kilometer long and especially low Kalmari Beach, which is known for the best sand in South-Finland! It’s the perfect beach for families, since it’s full of actions.

The region of Asikkala is best to be visited by car.

Canal of Vääksy

Outdoor & Sports

The Vääksy Canal, completed in 1871, links the water traffic between Vesijärvi and Päijänne. Vääksy Canal is a historic junction of waterborne traffic and Finland's busiest leisure inland waterway, a well-known tourist destination and cultural landscape. In time the canal served as support meadows, cargo and passenger ships. Nowadays, use is in the closure of recreational boats and pleasure boats. The Vääksy Canal is 1.3 km long and has only one block. The difference in water level is about three meters.

Old Vääksy

History & Architecture

The idyllic Old Vääksy is located on the west side of the canal. The atmosphere is created by the proximity of the canal, the river landscape, the whirlwind of the dam next to the Watermill Museum, the beautiful centuries-old buildings and the small, lovely shops. There is also an eel coffin near the Vääksynjoki dam, where these precious fish are caught alive and transported to the sea. This is where the wormy fishes begin their travel to the Atlantic and the Sargasso Sea, the only spawning ground in this freaky place.
