Centre of Sámi culture
Inari has been meaningful for humans since prehistoric times. Remains of villages have been found dating back 9000 years. The earliest known Sámi accommodation has been in the area nearly 4000 years ago. Juutua trekking areas river Nukkumajoki has been the location for ancient Sámi winter villages in 1400 and 1500 centuries. There are many sacred places of pre-Christian times like Ukko island and Otsamo fell as well as memorial sights from Christian times such as Hautuumaa islands and Pielpajärvi wilderness church.

At the crossroads Inari village has always been a meeting place for culture and people. At the village fisherman, reindeer herders, artists, gold prospectors, tourism operators and public officers have met. For all people of Inari nature is where they live and most of the source of livelihood comes from. Todays Inari history is still present and you can reach the lifestyle beyond fells as a true way of Lappish life. In Inari you can find the most talented and interesting local artists and crafters who you can meet at the little boutiques and workshops in the village.

Lake Inarijärvi

The beautifully rugged wilderness lake of Inari, or Inarijärvi in Finnish, is the third largest and the second deepest lake in Finland. The great lake features some 3,318 islands, as well as a series of large ridges without islands. A tight-knit network of wilderness huts carpets the shoreline and the islands, providing shelter for canoeists and boaters during the summer and cross-country skiers during the winter. During the summer season that kicks off in June, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy Lake Inari via a boat cruise.

Ukonsaari Island

The holy site of Ukonsaari Island in Lake Inarijärvi has been a place of worship amongst Sámi people. The rocky island is approximately 30 metres high, 50 metres wide and 100 metres long and can be identified from a distance. The island is an essential part of the cultural heritage and considered sacred, which should be respected by all visitors on the lake.

Pielpajärvi wilderness church

The wilderness church of Lake Pielpajärvi is of cultural and historical significance for many reasons. It is the old winter village of Inari, where people gathered to stay for the winter months during centuries. Built in 1760, it is one of the oldest buildings in northern Lapland. It was in use until the end of the 19th century. In the summertime, Pielpajärvi is only accessible by foot along a 5 km hiking path or by boat from Pielpavuono pier in Lake Inarijärvi. In the wintertime it can be reached by skiing and snowmobile.

Otsamo fell

Otsamo is a 418 m high fell overlooking the Inari village. Otsamo peak boasts magnificent views of lakes Inarijärvi and Muddusjärvi, River Juutuanjoki and the fells of Muotkatunturi and Joenkielinen. The hiking trails to Otsamo start from nearby Siida and another from youth centre Vasatokka. During late winter there is a maintained ski track. At the top of the fell, there is a cabin where visitors can take a break.

Sámi Museum and Nature Centre Siida

In Siida visitor can find the Nature Centre of Northern Lapland, the Sámi Museum and tourist information. Siida offers the visitor both expert knowledge and exciting experiences that appeal to many senses. The permanent exhibition links Sámi culture and northern nature to one another and provides an abundance of information. There are also many temporary exhibitions. In the summer season, the indoor exhibitions of Siida are complemented by an open-air museum.

Perhaps it is the most traditional road trip in Lapland, which heads along the E75 highway northwards from Rovaniemi towards the North Cape. This time the trip is taken entirely in Finland, from southern Lapland up to the rugged fell highlands of Utsjoki and the Tenojoki River. Saariselkä, Utsjoki and Inari are great destinations for staying overnight on the trip. In Rovaniemi at Arktikum and in Inari at Siida, visitors are taken on a journey to experience the culture of the northern regions and the indigenous Sámi.

It means an endless amount of untouched nature where you are completely equal to nature. You will travel at the pace of nature with your favorite hobby or you will rediscover or experience it for the first time. You can safely walk around the services under the guidance of a guide or travel for hours or days without seeing anyone but the animals and changing vegetation of northernmost Lapland.
