Jyväskylä
Heart of Finnish Lakeland
Jyväskylä is a forerunner in city lighting in Finland and abroad. In addition to energy efficiency and safety, Jyväskylä invests in aesthetics in city lighting, making the city even more enjoyable for its residents and further improving their quality of life. This systematic work has gained major international recognition, including first prize in the city.people.light awards in 2009.
Jyväskylä is particularly known as a city of education and sports. There are 130,000 residents, and about 30,000 of them are students. The university, the polytechnic and other occupational education institutes ensure a wide range of modern education, which also meets continuously changing business needs. The university´s Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences is the only one of its kind in Finland, which means that research and teaching operations in the field are strongly centralised in Jyväskylä.
Residents of Jyväskylä do daily physical activities and exercise more than on average. Jyväskylä is also known for its many top-notch athletes and successful sport clubs. Ski-jumpers, rally drivers, the Finnish ice hockey champions, JYP, as well as the multiple number one in Finnish baseball, Kirittäret, to mention a few, have provided moments of excitement and the joy of victory.
