Jyväskylä is particularly known as a city of education and sports. There are 130,000 residents, and about 30,000 of them are students. The university, the polytechnic and other occupational education institutes ensure a wide range of modern education, which also meets continuously changing business needs. The university´s Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences is the only one of its kind in Finland, which means that research and teaching operations in the field are strongly centralised in Jyväskylä.

Residents of Jyväskylä do daily physical activities and exercise more than on average. Jyväskylä is also known for its many top-notch athletes and successful sport clubs. Ski-jumpers, rally drivers, the Finnish ice hockey champions, JYP, as well as the multiple number one in Finnish baseball, Kirittäret, to mention a few, have provided moments of excitement and the joy of victory.

Kuokkala Bridge

Kuokkala bridge is a landmark that features prominently in many images of Jyväskylä, the Kuokkala bridge joins various areas of the city. It is particulary beutifully illuminated; as darkness falls it is a veritable work of arts. Below the bridge hangs Seppo Uuranmäki's swings artwork. At first glance it is easy to mistake the figure for a real person.

Water Tower

Kuokkala's water tower can be seen from far and wide. Seen from Jyväskylä's Lutakko harbour it exerts a dominance over the landscape. In the dusk of evening the illumination of the tower and Kuokkala bridge combine to produce a wonderful spectacle. You don´t need to be sci-fi fan to recognise the tower´s UFO characteristics.

Harju Ridge & Vesilinna

Jyväskylä's Harju ridge is a legendary landmark. At its summit the Vesilinna observation tower which affords fantastic views. Vesilinna is also home to an excellent restaurant and natural history museum. Harju is also a favourite with fitness enthusiasts and sports fans, since the ridge is circled by a pleasant sawdust jogging track with the Harju stadium at its centre.

Oravivuori Station Point

The top of Oravivuori hill, in Korpilahti, is the location of one of Finland´s six station points in the struve chain. The chain in question is a triangulation chain extending from the black sea to the Artic Ocean used in the 19th ceuntry to ascertain the shape of the earth. The Oravivuori triangulation tower affords fantastic views over a broad expanse of Lake Päijänne.
