Kajaani

Kajaani, founded in 1651, is the capital of the province of Kainuu. Around half of the whole population of the province of Kainuu lives in Kajaani. The number of inhabitants is some 37 000. The city center of Kajaani is compact and many of the sights and attractions are situated within walking distance. Kajaani offers a wide selection of cultural experiences, shops, restaurants and bars. Accommodation services in Kajaani vary from small hostels to romantic manors and unique birdhouse hotel.

In July the steamship Kouta, the northernmost steamship in Finland and whole Europe, makes regular cruises on the Lake Oulujärvi. Ärjänsaari Island located in Lake Oulujärvi offers a perfect Nordic landscape with clear blue waters, sand beaches and green forests.

Kajaani Castle Ruins

History & Architecture

Kajaani River Park hosts the northernmost stone castle in the world, built in the early 17th century. At the time, the castle served as a guardian of an important waterway and the security of the Swedish border regions, and later also a prison. The castle was destroyed in the Northern War in 1716. The remaining castle ruins takes you back in history while in the heart of a city. Kajaani Castle Ruins are open all year round, but there is no winter maintenance in the area. The ruins of the castle are regularly inspected for possible damage.

Tar canal

Landscapes & Sceneries

The only tar canal in the world, built in the 1840’s. The tar canal was in use from 1846 to 1915 and it is situated by the Kajaani Castle ruins.

Ärjä Island

History & Architecture

A beautiful island paradise on Lake Oulujärvi, Ärjä is known for its long sandy beaches, high shore slopes and green forests. A summer day on Ärjä island is fast by hiking, looking for geocaches, running trails, swimming or just resting on the wonderful sandy beaches enjoying the sun. You can also visit the sheep of Ärjä, which are on summer work. On the island of Ärjä, you can overnight in the rental cabins during the summer by prior arrangement. There is a boat transport to the island by Luonnollisesti Oulujärvi or Steamship Kouta companies.

Steamship Kouta

History & Architecture

The steamship Kouta is the northernmost steamship in Finland and whole Europe. Ship and its original steam engine were built in 1921 and the ship has been steaming since. The cruises offer authentic steamship atmosphere and the possibility to enjoy the beautiful sceneries of Lake Oulujärvi while the steamship crew tells stories of the history of the ship. During the cruise, the passengers have the possibility to visit the ship’s engine room. Steamship Kouta is located in Kalkkisilta Harbour in Kajaani.
