In addition to the biggest wooden church in the world, the crystal clear waters of Lake Puruvesi and delicious vendace, Kerimäki has a lot to offer to suit every taste. One of the most challenging golf courses in Finland, Kerigolf, is well-worth visiting! For nature lovers there are marked walking and ski trails in the forests, not to forget the magnificent Hytermä islands, a nature reserve 7 km to the east of the village. Kerimäki Wooden Church

History & Architecture

Kerimäki Wooden Church is world's largest Christian wooden church. The majestical Empire style double-cruciform church was designed by architect A. F. Granstedt and the construction was completed in 1847. It is 45 meters long, 42 meters wide and 27 meters high and has a seating capacity of over 3000. Including standing room, the church can accommodate 5000 people. The height of church's dome is 37 meters. In the summer the church is open for visitors.

Kerimäki Church shore

Beach

Kerimäki Church shore is a sandy beach for swimming and a boat harbour in the center of Kerimäki on the shores of crystal clear lake Puruvesi. The Church shore is known for its bright red wooden boat houses. The beach is ideal for families with children as the water is not very deep. There is also an activity park and beach volleyball courts within walking distance.

The Hytermä Nature Reserve

Wildlife & Nature

The islands of Hytermä are surrounded by crystal clear lake Puruvesi and they are one of the most beautiful natural attractions of Saimaa area. The islands of Hytermä were declared as nature reserve already in 1931. There are old buildings, a nature trail and interesting art made of stones in the islands. Hytermä can be accessed by hiring a rowing boat.
