Vibrant border town with diverse nature
Enjoy the real finnish nature surrounded by Kitee! There you can find natural trails to hike, bike or run, different lakes to be fulfilled with activities all year around and much more. Kitee is also hometown for the most internationally succesful Finnish band ever; Nightwish.

Don't forget to visit Kesälahti, which is part of the city of Kitee. Kesälahti is situated between the two large crystal-clear lakes of Puruvesi and Pyhäjärvi and is without doubt one of the most beautiful and sunny communities in Finland. Kitee offers excellent opportunities for sport and leisure pursuits. The snowmobile tracks in the area are considered to be among the best in Finland. The 1,800-kilometer track covers the landscape of the whole province.

Kitee Sports Park, known by its more familiar name of Hutsi, provides a venue for almost any type of sport. There are different kinds of playing fields, a ski-jumping slope, a shooting range, a new swimming pool VesPeli and an ice hockey rink. The town is also known for its pontikka (moonshine), also known as Kiteen kirkas - and for its baseball enthusiasm.

In Kitee, the fourth largest zoo in Finland, you can explore 50 different species of animals along the landscape path, such as yaks, Ayam gemani chickens and the Riku bear. Right next to the animal park there is a hotel, cottages, restaurant, dance pavilion, shop and Spa. Kitee Zoo is open all year round.

Galleria Tienkorva

Arts & Culture

Galleria Tienkorva is the studio home of local artists Merja Kupiainen and Ahti Pitkänen. In summertime, exhibitions of their own art and that of guest artists are held in the converted barn and outside in the garden.

Karelian Trails

The Karelian Trails is a network of trails for hiking, trail running and mountainbiking in Kitee, Tohmajärvi and Rääkkylä. It's also easy to access the trails from the town centres. These are trails for all levels, and they range in distance from five to eight kilometres.
