Kuhmoinen's nature, Päijänne and hundreds of lakes offer a wonderful setting for relaxation. We have great nature sites for many tastes, a good examples being the magnificent Isojärvi National Park and the historic Päijälä Castle Mountain. Good opportunities for outdoor activities support this closeness to nature well. In our 65 km long mountain bike trail you can easily see Kuhmoinen's special terrain that has large rock boulders and elevation differences.

On the Pitkävesi canoeing route, you can admire nature by the water. This wilderness lake and river route includes 9 lakes that connect the route through many rivers. On the route you can see the achievements of beavers, flourishing nature and many places that you can only see on a canoe.

The cozy center of Kuhmoinen right on the side of Lake Päijänne is charming. You can spend time well in nice cafes and boutiques. Sahanranta Harbor is located right next to the city center. Harbor is full of life in summertime.

Isojärvi National Park

Wildlife & Nature

Isojärvi National Park is a magnificent national park at its own peace. lt’s located just over an hour's drive from Lahti, Tampere and Jyväskylä. Large boulders, clear Isojärvi and cute beavers can be found here. Isojärvi offers a lot to see and experience for hikers, paddlers and mountain bikers. There are several routes departing from Herety's cabin café. Isojärvi is a perfect nature destination for both day tripers and overnight travelers.

Saharanta harbor

Sahanranta harbor is located on the shores of Lake Päijänne, within walking distance (300 m.) Of the idyllic center of Kuhmoinen. This port, which has won Award of the best guest-harbour in Finland three times, is definitely worth a visit during the summer. There you can enjoy the magnificent scenery of Päijänne, admire the boats and enjoy local delicacies. The port of Sahanranta is full of life in the summer and there is a lot to do from mini golf to stand up paddling. There is also a temporary travel park for caravans near the harbor.

Riihigalleria

Arts & Culture

Riihigalleria is a summer art exhibition venue with an art exhibition that changes every summer. Riihigalleria is located on the edge of a small rapids and lake. The gallery is a great place to visit due to its diversity, impact and beautiful location. It was built by artist Niilo Suojoki from six nearby drying barns. Riihigallery has also a café where you can get quality products from local craftsmen to take home and as gifts. The Riihigallery has a unique milieu and is still almost in its original form.

Pitkäveden kayaking route

Outdoor & Sports

The Pitkäveden canoeing route runs through Kuhmoinen through several beautiful rivers and small lakes. Route is also suitable for the less experienced paddler, but requires good basic condition. On the route you can see the achievements of beavers, flourishing finnish nature and beautiful small quiet lakes. The length of the route is 20.4 km and the duration of kayaking is about 6-10 hours. The route has several landing and lifting points, so you can also choose a section of the route that suits you.

Lake Päijänne is the second largest lake in Finland. It is surrounded by rural landscape, idyllic towns and many islands. You can drive your way around the lake either clockwise or as recommended. Start your journey from Lahti and reach Jyväskylä in a day or two. You will drive past some of the most beautiful sceneries and landscapes in southern Finland.
