Leivonmäki National Park

Finland in a smaller version
Eskers, lakes, mires, forests - all typical features of Central Finland’s nature can be found in Leivonmäki National Park. You can familiarise yourself with all this on nature trails in the park during a single visit. The most rugged forests of the park are located in Syysniemi, at the northern tip of the area. Hietajärvenkangas around Selänpohja and the Joutsniemi area are home to old pine forests. The same chain of eskers continues south of Lake Rutajärvi as Haapasuonharju, which has a length of several kilometres. In the pine forests of Leivonmäki, you may hear the beautiful singing of mistle thrush or see as a black woodpecker is carving a nest hole for itself.

Haapasuonharju Ridge, on the western side of Haapasuo Mire, is dominated by rugged dry pine forests, where the good Lingonberry harvest attracts people to pick berries in the autumn. Like in Syysniemi, in the middle of the more than 100-years-old pine forests you can see small esker lakes, and a diverse tree stand grows in depressions and "suppa" holes, which were made by melting ice after the Ice Age. The sandy Vartijamäki road on Haapasuonharju Ridge is a great scenic road through the southern part of the park.

Nature Trails

Wildlife & Nature

The park's nature trails are the best way to get to know the area. Koskikaran Kierros Trail (3.5 km) introduces visitors to the area's rich flora and fauna, and Luupään Lenkki Trail (2.2 km) explains the area's geology and the effects of the Ice Age. Signposts along the trails offer information about landforms such as kettles, eskers and glacial erratics and the park's signature species, the nightjar.

Walk on Marked Trails

Landscapes & Sceneries

There are a total of approximately 28 kilometres of marked trails in the park. All the trails are clearly signposted, and the terrain is not very demanding. There are three circular trails as well as other routes (1.5–11 km) that run along the park's eskers and through wetland areas and woods. There are campfire sites on the shores of Lake Rutajärvi in Lintuniemi and Joutsniemi. There is also a lean-to shelter for overnight stays by Soimalammi pond, or you can bring your own tent and stay at the camping sites of Harjujärvi or Lintuniemi.

Pick Berries and Mushrooms

Wildlife & Nature

The park has several species of edible mushrooms and wild berries. Berry and mushroom picking is allowed throughout the park with the exception of the restricted areas of Haapasuo wetland during the bird breeding season from 15 April to 15 July.

Birdwatching

Wildlife & Nature

Haapasuonharju esker is one of the most important breeding grounds for nightjars in Central Finland. There is a birdwatching tower along Kirveslammin Kierros Trail, which is a great spot for observing the many species of birds found in Haapasuo wetland.

Canoeing and Rowing

Outdoor & Sports

Lake Rutajärvi is great for canoeing and rowing. The best places to set off are Harjunlahti and Haapalahti. There are lean-to shelters on the islands of Halttusensaari and Niinisaari for overnight stays. It is not possible to canoe in Rutajoki River, because it has been cleared and dams have been built in it.
