Miehikkälä combines beautiful nature with Finnish military history. Miehikkälä's diverse rural landscapes offer opportunities for hiking and trekking. In Miehikkälä you can also go cycling and fishing, as well as test your fitness routines at the natural gym. The wildest visitors can raise their adrenaline levels on a motocross track or paddle on the Vaalimaanjoki rapids.

Miehikkälä's most attractive historical sites are Salpalinja and 50 km long Salpapolku that runs along with it. Salpalinja is still the most significant defense structure in independent Finland and its history is told in the Salpalinja Museum. Salpapolku offers fascinating hiking trails, along which you will find unique landscapes as well as sheds and huts, which provide an experiential setting for overnight hiking.

Pikkukylien Pikkumarkkinat and the Summer Market bring people together during the busy summer months. The best local handicrafts and delicacies can be found in the markets. In Miehikkälä, you can also visit culturally and historically significant sites, such as Pitkäkoski sawmill which is the third oldest sawmill in Finland, Hauhia mill built-in 1882, and more than 100-year-old Miehikkälä church.

Salpa Line Museum

History & Architecture

Salpa Line Museum is a military history museum presenting the history of the Salpa Line. Covering an area of several hectares, the museum is displaying the history of fortification works of the Salpa Line. It provides an opportunity to explore the restored bunkers, dug-outs, trenches, stone anti-tank line, and weaponry of the Salpa Line with a professional guide. The permanent exhibition comprises an indoor exhibition including multimedia and an outdoor museum area with guided paths in rugged and rocky forest terrain.

History & Architecture

Salpa Line – one of Europe’s strongest and best-preserved lines of defense fortification, built during the Second World War. 1200 km long Salpa Line is a massive set of fortifications on Finland’s eastern border. The construction started in 1940 and when it was finished in 1944 the defense line consisted of 728 concrete bunkers, 3000 wooden field fortresses, 225 km of anti-tank obstacles and more than 350 km of combat trenches. There is a 43-kilometer hiking route to explore parts of the line, called Salpa trail.

Myllylampi Recreation Area

Outdoor & Sports

Myllylampi outdoor and recreation area consist of beach for swimming, outdoor gym, place for barbeque and track for jogging and skiing. The frisbee golf field has 18 areas with small height difference and is located in the forest area. The access to the field and other outdoor activities are free of charge and open for everyone.

Church of Miehikkälä

History & Architecture

The Church of Miehikkälä was consecrated in November 1881. The exterior of the brick-built church combines Neo-Gothic architecture and other architectural styles of the late 19th century. The original organ made by Zachariassen Organ Factory still holds 10 original registers and the exterior.
