Savonlinna is a small city with a rich cultural life. The Savonlinna Opera Festival at Olavinlinna Castle is a world famous cultural event. In addition to the Savonlinna Opera Festival, the Savonlinna area has a lot of other live music too, from the classical concerts of Savonlinna Music Academy to Huvila’s outdoor rock and pop concerts. Go and listen to Savonlinna alive with music! During summer, Savonlinna is a wonderful destination for art lovers. The area has many art galleries open during the summer and the museums with their exhibitions are open all year round.

You can enjoy the theatre at any time of year. Savonlinna Theatre has around five new plays each year and during the summer the area has many outdoor summer theatres. The Savonlinna area has many historical destinations as well, of which Olavinlinna Castle is the most famous. If you are interested in history you can visit the largest wooden church in the world at Kerimäki, and investigate statues and memorials of the area.

History & Architecture

The building of Olavinlinna Castle began in 1475. The Danish-born founder of the castle, knight Erik Axelsson Tott, decided that a powerful fortification should be build to protect the strategically important Savo region. The castle was to repel Russian attacks from the east and to guarantee the control of the Savo region for the Swedish Crown. The history of Olavinlinna is a mixture of medieval arms clashing, cannons roaring and people doing everyday chores inside the security of the castle’s thick walls. Olavinlinna is open all year round.

At the feet of Olavinlinna Castle, you can get a feeling of old historical Savonlinna with its wooden houses and old avenues. Savonlinna is built on islands nestled by Olavinlinna castle and Lake Saimaa. The city itself started gaining form slowly towards the end of 1400. During the time that the castle was being built, the area gained a lot of craftspeople, masons and other people who worked in the castle. The community stabilized, and in the year 1639 Pietari Brahe founded the city of Savonlinna.

Paddling at Lake Saimaa is amazing since it has vast open lakes, rocky coves, forested shorelines and maze-like island chains. The national parks Linnansaari and Kolovesi are made to be explored by paddling. Savonlinna town is surrounded by Lake Saimaa, which means you can even go and see the city’s sights by canoe. Punkaharju Esker Nature Reserve is an example of esker formation at its most beautiful. The area’s natural features have been maintained with special emphasis on landscape values. Punkaharju’s naturally gorgeous landscape offers excellent opportunities for hikes of different lengths. There are three marked trails in Laukansaari Research Park and the Kokonharju Esker area. Additionally there are two marked and numerous unmarked but clearly visible trails through the terrain in the esker area. Punkaharju Nature Reserve area is easy to reach.
