Life is Meant to be Easy
Landscapes shaped by ice and sea and vast expanses of stunning flatlands

In Kvarken Archipelago, land uplift is increasing the amount of land by square kilometre each year, which is equivalent to more than 150 football fields. The vast lowlands and green fields that have risen from the sea over time stretch out to meet a calm horizon in all directions.

Valuable Natural Heritage

The unique Kvarken Archipelago is Finland's only Natural World Heritage Site on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Together with Sweden's High Coast, the Kvarken Archipelago is the best place in the world to experience and understand the land uplift phenomenon caused by the last Ice Age.

The best food is simple

Vaasa and the region invest heavily in all things local, which is why you will also find lots of locally produced food. When the ingredients are fresh, complicated recipes are not needed; the food is enjoyed simply as it is.

Vaasa Market Hall

History & Architecture

The Market Hall has served for over 100 years as a shopping & meeting place in Vaasa. We merchants are proud of the Gothic market hall building and its evocative atmosphere. The Vaasa Market Hall is one of the oldest in the country and protected by design. The hall was built in two sections, the first of which was completed in 1902 on the Vaasanpuisto side and the second on the Kauppapuistikko in 1927.

Ruins Of Old Vaasa

History & Architecture

You can sense a bit of time as you head for Old Vaasa, where the ruins of the medieval St. Mary's Church rise. An old bell tower stands next to the church and a little further away the ruins of the trivial school tell the traveler that there was once an entire city. The Stone Church of St. Mary was built in the late 15th century and early 16th century. It was expanded a few times and eventually built in the shape of a cross, because the church was to serve a large group in the province.

Kvarken Archipelago

History & Architecture

The ever-rising rocky archipelago of Kvarken is Finland's only Natural World Heritage Site on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the archipelago formed by the last ice age, land uplift reveals new worlds and gorgeous labyrinthine moraine ridges. The kingdom of rocks can be admired on world heritage cruises, Björköby's high observation tower or canoeing. Traditionally respected archipelago villages and well-kept village scenery pulse life.
